got a message out of the blue about that 'why Batman doesn't kill' explanation I left on someone else's post like two years ago but it was just "wait is Alfred dead????" and I sort of forgot that most of tumblr Batfam fandom doesn't actually read comics and so largely has no idea that Bane killed Alfred back in 2019 and he's stayed dead since

Books of 2025: OVERGROWTH by Mira Grant.
Plant-astically delighted to report that I received an ARC via Tor (Nightfire) and Goodreads! I love Seanan McGuire's writing, and my first foray into her work as Mira Grant was INTO THE DROWNING DEEP, which was phenomenal (think all the best parts of Michael Crichton--the Science, the Speculation, the Consequences--but women and queer people are Entire Characters)(we love a good sci-fi horror paced like a thriller in this house).
The premise of OVERGROWTH is basically "the pod people are coming, they've been warning you about it for decades, and no one has been listening." Stasia, our main character and (first person, past tense) narrator, has spent her whole life telling people that she's "the vanguard of an invading species of intelligent alien plants," which is confirmed via a broadcast from space.
And the chapters are time-stamped "X days pre-invasion."
Yeah.
This book was an absolute delight and all around a lot of fun--the tone was the perfect balance of funny and heartfelt and relatable and dread-inducing, and it very much read like a love letter to the genre with lots of cross-pollinated references (Seymour? Little Shop of Horrors? War of the Worlds? Jurassic Park? Hello????).
It was also very much a book about the distinction between being human and being a person, and about alienation and belief and trust and friendship, and about queerness and neurodivergence and belonging. And, y'know, mimetic plant aliens, in myriad shades of green.
I was initially surprised by the choice to tell this story in past tense and first person (because DROWNING DEEP was patently not that, and most of what I've read of McGuire hasn't been either), but it turns out that was The Only Correct Way To Do It: For most of the book, Stasia didn't have the full picture of what was going on, but her partial understanding + our readerly perspective from inside her head carried both the relatability and the horror. It was a really interesting and cool way to do an alien invasion book (from the perspective of the invader's plant)(ahaha, botanical pun). Also, the narrative frame made me pterodactyl Hunter shriek my way through the last two pages, which. OOF. WHAT A RIDE!!! I'll be rotisserie-ing over the late-game twist (page 396/465 in my copy) and the ending for a long time.
I loved that the aliens felt alien and all too much like people; I loved Toni and Hunter; I loved the biology and worldbuilding; I loved the botanical quips ("salad bar" is, in fact, the best possible term of address to an alien invader, no notes); I loved the shady government agencies and unethical experimentation; I loved the "we are the monsters you have made". I stayed up way past my bedtime several times for this, and it was worth every second. Do recommend, check this out in May!!
Half-assed spoilery content warnings under the cut (I'm not good at these because I have a weird concept of what necessitates a warning, so please do NOT consider these complete in any way shape or form):
on-page toddler death (graphic, in prologue, signposted with "look away"); transphobia (toward beloved trans character); spider (alien); bug-adjacent (alien); vampirism/blood drinking; other usual horror/alien invasion type tropes etc. (body horror? do people tag body horror?? i was an animorphs kid i'm sorry i don't know what a normal amount of body horror is but i love it all)

any tips for someone coming off as "too mean"? through your posts and a few years of self confidence building, i feel comfortable in myself, my looks, my abilities, my intelligence, ect. ive only had a boyfriend or two (im only fifteen to be fair)
and while im not looking for sex or anything, my friends have told me that i might be too outspoken and thats the reason i don't attract boys my age. to be fair, i am a very blunt person and im not afraid to say what im thinking which sometimes comes off as rude. is there something im doing wrong or need to improve?
Hi love! Well, as someone who has been called an "ice queen" since I was around your age and probably for the last time most recently last week (as someone whose a couple of months shy of age 25), I'll share my perspective on the difference between being "too mean" and assertive.
Being assertive, speaking your truth, and displaying confidence at a younger age is very intimidating to some people (especially in young women/teenage girls, especially when it comes to guys). Firstly, you have plenty of time to worry about sex, dating, and flirting with guys. If you find someone you have chemistry with over the next few months or couple of years, pursue that relationship if it feels right to you. Otherwise, don't worry about timelines – there's no rush.
If you think you're being "too mean," consider the differences between being assertive, people-pleasing, and being tactless/aggressive.
Assertive: Standing your ground, saying what you mean and meaning what you say in a collected, confident manner, upholding your boundaries, interacting with tact and respect for the other person's emotions while not allowing the other person's opinions or desires to persuade you to sacrifice your needs, goals, or desires.
People Pleasing: Doing everything in your power, modifying your speech and behavior, and putting others' needs above your own to ensure others are happy and not upset with you. People pleasing prioritizes others' desires and goals above your own and conditions you to forgo your sense of self/identity for approval. If you're a people pleaser, you tend to make decisions based on how they're perceived by others rather than allowing yourself to be guided by your personal preferences and comfortability.
Aggressive: Callous behavior that lacks empathy or awareness that others have needs, just like yourself. Being aggressive sets the expectation that you expect others to sacrifice their needs to satisfy your own. While you should put your needs first when making decisions for yourself, it is important to expect and honor others' desire to do the same. Respect their decisions and boundaries with grace. Leave if your needs aren't being met with the understanding that some people are not compatible with you in life and have different needs, preferences, or desires of their own (or lack this skill of differentiation – the acknowledgment of where your personhood and identity end the other person's identity begins in ant aspect of the relationship).
While being heartless and overly self-involved are not attractive qualities, I will tell you that, as women/girls, we are socialized to suit patriarchial norms and believe that minimizing our voices and needs are virtuous traits. It is very common for teenage girls/younger women to feel conditioned to perform these submissive, self-sacrificing roles at the expense of their own needs, goals, and identities. When women/girls don't conform to these patriarchal standards or, even choose to fully rebel against them (guilty, lol), there are a lot of women/girls who will shame you due to their own social conditioning and/or internalized misogyny.
A lot of younger boys/men will objectify you more openly for being an attractive, confident, and assertive young woman. I will warn you. Dating people your own age can be difficult (a grade year ahead or two might be more compatible, honestly). If you're interested in boys for male attention or validation, don't waste your energy (even if that's easier said than done given peer pressure and our social conditioning). Allow these relationships and interactions to come into your life organically. Focus on yourself, your goals, your studies, your friends, your hobbies. Learning how to interact in relationships is important and it's totally acceptable to satisfy any sexual frustration in some form or another, but centralizing boys is never a fruitful pursuit.
Hope this helps xx

★ thinking about satoru who simply laughs whenever someone points out that you and him are an odd pair — likely wondering what an overly loud and boisterous person such as himself is doing dating you, who is the complete polar opposite.
because while he may excel in social settings due to years of practise being the centre of everyone's attention; you, on the other hand, struggle to speak to or even hold eye contact with anyone other than him, often opting to nervously fiddle with the sleeves of your shirt and hide behind his tall form instead.
and all he can think about is how they would react if they were to see how dramatically the roles are reversed the moment the two of you are alone, his shy little girlfriend whispering the dirtiest things into his ear while she rides him senseless.
“mmph— fuck, baby, y’gotta slow down,” satoru pants breathlessly, big hands gripping at your hips in a half-hearted attempt to stall your frenzied pace. “otherwise ‘m not gonna last.”
“you’ll last,” you assure in a deceptively sweet whisper, hands splaying over the pale, hard planes of his chest as you bounce up and down on his cock like your life depends on it. “but if you don’t, i’ll just keep going until you get hard again.”
and he just gapes up at you dumbly, drool threatening to spill from between his parted maw as he is rendered unable to do anything other then lay there and take it, the waterlines of his snowy lashes prickling with shiny tears from how good it all feels.
if he could collect himself enough to speak again, he'd probably gush about how much pride he takes in the fact that he’s the only one who gets to see you like this; the only one who you feel comfortable enough coming out of your shell around in order to show him the real you.
and oh, is the real you a sight to behold — head thrown back in ecstasy as you use him as your personal dildo to chase your own pleasure, plush tits bouncing freely with the force of each of your movements… and, most importantly, not a hint of your usual timidness to be seen.
but of course satoru won’t say any of this to whoever is currently inquiring about your compatibility. instead, his lips will simply quirk up into a small, wry smile and he’ll settle for muttering out a vague “we mesh together pretty well, actually.”

UNEXPECTED GUESTS I
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
jason x reader, platonic!damian wayne
divider by: @cafekitsune & @thecutestgrotto & @omi-resources word count: 835 synopsis: Jason’s secret relationship is discovered by Damian—who keeps showing up uninvited. Jason’s patience is tested, popcorn is made, but at least Damian brought cinnamon rolls. a/n: this one went off the rails slightly and the rest of the upcoming parts are equally as unhinged (at least compared to what I usually write).
Tumblr media
Compared to your apartment, Jason’s place was practically Fort Knox. You and he had been dating long enough that you’d practically moved in—and you knew his secret identity. Still, you’d never met his family, something Jason was adamant about keeping that way. You knew of them, of course, but hadn’t expected to meet them anytime soon.
Which was why you definitely weren’t expecting a ten-year-old ninja to break in.
You had just stepped out of the shower when you heard it—the quiet thud. At first, you thought it might’ve been Jason returning from patrol early. But then came the faint creak of the window opening.
Jason never used the window.
Cautiously, you stepped into the living room, still in a robe, hair dripping. And froze.
There, near the kitchen counter, stood a boy. Arms crossed. Hood down. Eyes sharp as blades.
“You’re not his roommate,” he said flatly.
You blinked. Your shoulders slowly relaxed. While you’d never met Damian Wayne personally, you’d seen enough pictures—and heard Jason complain just enough about the “demon child”—to recognize him instantly.
“…And you’re not the pizza guy,” you replied, equally dry, one brow raised. “So I guess we’re both surprised.”
He didn’t smile. Didn’t even blink. Just stared, like he was trying to unearth your darkest secrets with sheer willpower.
“Who are you?” he demanded, stepping forward.
“His girlfriend,” you said, calmly. And waited for the explosion.
There was no point in hiding it. You figured that now that you’d met Damian, it was only a matter of time before the rest of the Bat-family found out. Honestly, you were surprised they hadn’t already—weren’t they supposed to be the world’s greatest detectives?
It didn’t take long.
“I knew it,” the boy hissed. “He’s been acting suspicious for weeks. Staying out longer. Not snapping at everyone. There was even a smile—a smile—on his face during training.”
He circled you slowly, hands behind his back like a miniature detective—or a very judgmental cat. “I assumed he was hiding something. Drugs. Maybe a dog. But you… you’re worse.”
Your lips twitched. “A dog would’ve been worse, to be honest. He’s not exactly home on time for walkies.”
He ignored your joke. “How do I know you’re not a threat? An assassin. A spy. Someone sent to manipulate him.”
You raised your hands in mock surrender. “You think I’m seducing Jason Todd for intel?” You snorted. “Believe me, no one’s paying me for this kind of emotional labor.”
His lips twitched—just barely. Not a smile. Not quite. But something close.
Still, he didn’t back down. “What do you know about him?”
“Enough to stay,” you answered simply, dropping onto the couch and toweling off your hair. “Enough to know he sleeps better when I’m here. Eats better. Talks more. Still leaves his laundry everywhere, but that’s apparently not fixable.”
Damian stood frozen, like he was running your answer through a thousand internal filters.
Eventually, he moved to sit—perching like a hawk on the armrest across from you, expression still wary but less… militant.
“So you know what he does,” Damian said stiffly.
“It’s how we met,” you replied, reaching for the remote. “He was horrible at keeping the whole alter ego a secret.”
“Are you trained?” he asked next.
“To deal with him? Yes.” You shot him a grin. “To fight? Not really. But I have excellent aim with a frying pan.”
For the first time, a snort escaped him—quick and unintentional. And then: “I suppose you’re tolerable.”
“That’s the nicest thing anyone under five feet has said to me.”
Damian frowned. “I’m ten.”
“Still under five feet.”
He huffed but stayed where he was, and after a moment, reached for the coffee table and grabbed the half-finished puzzle you’d been working on. Without asking, he began fitting pieces into place with alarming precision.
Tumblr media
An hour later, Jason came home through the fire escape, expecting silence—or maybe the sound of you watching reruns, bundled up in one of his old shirts.
What he didn’t expect was the sight of you and his youngest brother sitting side by side on the floor, surrounded by puzzle pieces and popcorn, mid-argument about whether Red Hood could beat a grizzly bear in a fight on pure strength alone.
He stopped in the doorway and stared.
Damian glanced up. “You’re late.”
Jason blinked. “You broke in.”
“He made popcorn,” you said helpfully, tossing a piece into your mouth.
Jason pointed between the two of you. “What the hell is happening?”
“She’s tolerable,” Damian said, as if that answered everything.
Jason groaned. “I leave for two hours…”
“And you almost lost your popcorn privileges for keeping me hidden,” you added, smirking at him. “Apparently, I’m a national security threat.”
Jason pinched the bridge of his nose, muttering something about Wayne surveillance equipment and upgrading the locks to keep out demons.
But secretly?
He didn’t mind the sight of the two people he cared about most, sitting there together and getting along.
He’d just never admit it out loud.
